Burnt coils are annoying and replacing them constantly can get expensive. But did you know that with a few simple habits, you can significantly extend the lifespan of your coils? Here are 5 easy tricks to keep your coils tasting fresh for longe
1.Always Prime Your Coils
This is the golden rule of vaping! When you install a brand-new coil, the cotton inside is completely dry. If you fire up your device straight away, the dry cotton will burn. How to prime: Before putting the coil into the tank, drip a few drops of e-liquid directly onto the exposed cotton through the side holes. Once assembled and filled, let the tank sit for 5–10 minutes before taking your first puff.
2. Don't Let Your Tank Run Dry
If your e-liquid level gets too low, the cotton inside the coil won't be able to soak up enough juice. When you vape, you'll burn the dry cotton. Always keep an eye on your tank and top it up before the liquid falls below the coil’s wicking holes.
3. Stick to the Recommended Wattage
Most coils have a recommended wattage range laser-etched onto the side (for example, 40W-60W). If you push your device to a wattage higher than recommended, the e-liquid will vaporise faster than the cotton can absorb it, leading to an instant burnt taste. Start at the lower end of the wattage range and slowly work your way up.
4. Watch Out for "Coil Killer" E-Liquids
We all love sweet, dessert-flavoured e-liquids, but heavy sweeteners can caramelise and gunk up your coils very quickly. If you find your coils are turning black and dying after just a few days, try switching to a clearer, less sugary flavour for a while.
5. Use the Right VG/PG Ratio
Thick e-liquids (like 80% VG or higher) are great for massive clouds, but they are harder for the cotton in smaller coils to absorb. If you are using a smaller pod kit, stick to 50/50 liquids. If you have a powerful sub-ohm tank, thicker liquids like 70VG/30PG will work perfectly.

No matter how well you treat them, all coils eventually need replacing. If your vape is losing flavour, producing less vapour, or tasting slightly burnt, it’s time for a change.
